Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue on Saturday in ny stated no fewer than 81 herdsmen had been convicted and 3,000 cows arrested below the kingdom’s anti-open grazing regulation.
Mr Ortom, who gave the update in a keynote cope at the 2019 annual conference of the Idoma association USA., said implementation of the regulation had added relative peace to the state.
“we’re implementing our regulation, and there may be relative peace. As at nowadays, we have convicted eighty one herdsmen. A few have paid fines; others are nevertheless in prison as I speak to you.
“we have long gone a step in addition. Everywhere we see livestock doing open grazing, we cross after them. Thus far, we have arrested over three,000 farm animals.
“The regulation stipulates that inside seven days, owners of such farm animals need to pay fines and reclaim them. We had been amassing fines from them,’’ he said.
While insisting that ranching remained the satisfactory option to the farmers/herders battle, the governor challenged each person with a higher alternative to convey it ahead.
Governor Ortom spoke on the subject, “security and economic challenges in Benue state’’, which was a change of the subject matter of the conference that concentrated on Idoma land.
He stated all parts of the nation had been going through similar challenges, which includes lack of confidence, infrastructural deficit, unemployment, fitness and sanitation issues, amongst others, therefore his selection to broaden the scope.
The governor stated only four of the 23 local government areas inside the state, particularly Otukpo, Konshisha, Ushongo and Vandeikya, had been spared of war between locals and herdsmen within the last six years.
“As at now, herdsmen have attacked 19 of the 23 local governments in Benue, claiming over five,000 lives between 2013 and 2018.
“Over 195,000 homes and 30 church buildings really worth billions of Naira have been destroyed during the attack’s” Mr Ortom stated.
Mr Ortom used the opportunity to brief his hosts on the policies, programmes and projects being executed by the state government under his leadership
